Srivilliputhur Andal Temple
Located about 80 km from Madurai, Srivilliputhur is a revered temple town and one of the celebrated 108 Divyadesams of Lord Vishnu. For devotees and Vaishnavites, the name Srivilliputhur is deeply connected with Lord Vishnu, Periyalvar, and Andal—two of the most prominent saints in the Vaishnavite tradition.
The shrine is known for its intricate sculptures, traditional artwork, and centuries-old architecture. Srivilliputhur is also the birthplace of two significant Tamil literary treasures—“Tiruppavai” composed by Andal and “Tirupallandu” composed by Periyalvar. These divine hymns, collectively known as Tamil Vedam (Alwar Pasurams), are recited every day inside the temple, preserving a timeless spiritual rhythm.
The temple’s iconic gopuram is so distinctive that it inspired the official emblem of the Tamil Nadu Government.
Temple Significance
The Srivilliputhur Andal Temple stands as a symbol of devotion, heritage, and Dravidian craftsmanship. Situated in the heart of Virudhunagar district, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Andal, the only female Alwar and an important figure in Vaishnavism. Known for her poetry, devotion, and divine love for Lord Ranganatha, Andal continues to inspire millions of devotees.
The temple is one of the major pilgrimage spots in South India and draws huge crowds during festivals, especially the grand Andal Thiruvadipooram, celebrated with great splendour. Its architectural design features towering gopurams, ornamental carvings, and traditional layouts that showcase the excellence of ancient Tamil architecture.
A visit to this temple offers both a spiritual awakening and a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical legacy shaped by ancient Tamil dynasties.
