Arulmigu Nellaiappar – Kanthimathi Temple, Tirunelveli

The Nellaiappar Temple, located in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, is one of the most revered Shaivite temples in South India. It is counted among the five sacred temples where Lord Shiva is believed to have performed the Nataraja Tandava, the cosmic dance symbolizing creation, preservation, and destruction. According to ancient Puranic traditions, the origins of this temple date back to around the 7th century CE.

Sprawling across nearly 14 acres, the Nellaiappar Temple complex is one of the largest temple complexes in Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the serene banks of the Thamirabarani River, adding to its spiritual and scenic significance.

Sacred History and Legends

The temple is closely associated with Sage Agastya, one of the revered Saptarishis, who is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva through intense penance in a bamboo forest that once existed at this site. Another important legend states that Lord Rama, after slaying the demon Maricha, worshipped Lord Shiva here to absolve himself of karmic consequences.

Twin Temple Structure and Architecture

The present-day Nellaiappar Temple is a twin temple complex, consisting of:

  • Nellaiappar Temple (Lord Shiva)
  • Kanthimathi Amman Temple (Goddess Parvati)

These two temples were originally separate and were later connected by the Chain Mandapam, constructed by Thiru Vadamalaiappa Pillaiyan, forming a single expansive complex.

On the western side of the Chain Mandapam lies a beautifully maintained flower garden, established nearly 250 years ago. At its center stands the Vasantha Mandapam, a graceful structure supported by 100 pillars.

One of the temple’s most celebrated architectural features is the musical pillars in the Mani Mandapam, which produce melodic sounds when gently struck, showcasing the advanced craftsmanship of ancient artisans.

Inscriptions and Sacred Halls

The temple complex contains numerous inscriptions dating back to 950 CE, offering valuable insights into its long history. Near the sanctum is a shrine for Nellai Govindan (Lord Vishnu), symbolizing Vishnu’s divine presence during the celestial wedding of Lord Nellaiappar and Goddess Kanthimathi.

A unique highlight of the temple is the Tamra Sabha (Copper Hall), renowned for its exquisite wooden carvings. During the festival of Arudra Darisanam, Lord Nataraja and Goddess Sivakami are worshipped here in a grand ceremonial manner.

Major Festivals

Several festivals are celebrated with great devotion at Nellaiappar Temple, including:

  • Arudra Darisanam
  • Navaratri
  • Thaipoosam (Tamil month of Thai)
  • Brahmotsavam, celebrated during Aani (June–July)
  • Thirukalyanam, the divine marriage festival, observed in Aippasi (October–November)

During Thirukalyanam, the deities of Lord Nellaiappar and Goddess Sivakami are richly adorned and taken in procession on a golden temple chariot, moving through the temple corridors and mandapams.
