Kulasekarapattinam Mutharamman Temple – Thoothukudi District
The Kulasekarapattinam Mutharamman Temple is a renowned Hindu shrine located in Kulasekarapattinam village near Thiruchendur, in the Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) district of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deities of the temple are Goddess Mutharamman and Lord Gnanamoorthiswaran.
Unique Features of the Temple
One of the most remarkable aspects of this temple is the combined idol (vigraham) of Goddess Mutharamman and Lord Shiva found within the sanctum sanctorum. This rare form of worship is believed to be unique and not found in any other temple.
According to tradition, the original shrine contained a Swayambhu Lingam, a naturally manifested form of Lord Shiva. It is believed that the Goddess appeared in the dreams of a sculptor and instructed him to carve her idol and wait for a priest from Kulasekarapattinam. At the same time, the priest is also said to have received a divine vision guiding him to the sculptor and directing him to install the idol near the Swayambhu Lingam. Thus, both deities came to be worshipped together in the sanctum.
The temple complex includes three main halls:
- Artha Mandapam (near the sanctum)
- Maha Mandapam
- Kodi Mandapam
Origin of Kulasekarapattinam
The town of Kulasekarapattinam derives its name from King Kulasekara Pandian. Local belief states that the king once received divine blessings from Goddess Mutharamman, after which the town was named in his honor.
Mythological Significance
Legend connects the temple with the story of Mahishasura. It is said that Sage Agathiyar once cursed Sage Varamuni, who later became known as Mahishasura. Through intense penance, Mahishasura gained immense power and began troubling the world.
Distressed sages sought the help of the Goddess, upon which a divine girl child appeared and was named Lalithambigai. She miraculously grew to full form within nine days—these days are commemorated as Navaratri, meaning nine sacred nights. On the tenth day, the Goddess destroyed Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. This day is celebrated as Dussehra, the most important festival of the temple.
